Composer's Notes:
When I wrote this for my church choir, we had two fine recorder players in our congregation. Recorder seems to be the perfect instrument to enhance the austere quality of William Billings' melody, which was first published in the New England Psalm Singer in 1770. However, other instruments may be substituted. The choral parts are very simple as Billings intended, with a single melody sung first in unison, then in two- and three-part rounds with slight harmonic variations. Suggestions for use are included on the back of the choral score.
