Composer's Notes:
This was a commission from the St. Olaf College Orchestra under the direction of Steven Amundson, a Luther classmate of mine who is an absolutely terrific conductor with equally terrific ensembles year after year. Romp is an energetic potpourri of styles with a fair amount of influence from Copland, Gershwin, John Adams and Frank Zappa, some of my favorite American composers. The percussionists are kept rather busy (but happy) throughout the entire piece. The St. Olaf Orchestra has taken this work on tour to the eastern United States. The complete instrumentation is: 3333, 4331, timpani, percussion (4 players) and strings.
