Composer's Notes:
This work was commissioned and premiered by the six combined choirs of the Angelica Cantanti youth choir program in Bloomington, Minnesota and the Cavani String Quartet of Cleveland, Ohio. Anton Armstrong conducted the premiere. There are six different folk songs with extended connecting interludes for the strings and piano. The titles of the folk songs are: "How Can I Keep From Singing", "Pretty Little Horses", "Skip To My Lou", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "Skinnamalinkadoolium", and "Old Joe Clark".
I have adapted a 10-minute segment of the larger work for the Hong Kong Children's Choir under the title of Three American Folk Songs.
