All Hail the Power (SATB, opt.
congregation, with full orchestra [w/ optional herald trps.]
or wind ensemble or brass/organ) Duration: 5'45" (Kallman
Creates Publications)
A festive setting of a grand old hymn with introductory fanfare.
CHORAL SCORE - $1.65
ORCHESTRAL SCORE AND PARTS - RENTAL (inquire for fee)
WIND ENSEMBLE SCORE AND PARTS - RENTAL (inquire for fee)
BRASS SEPTET VERSION SCORE AND PARTS - $40
I was commissioned to arrange this as the opening hymn for
the Pax Christi Award Ceremony at St. John's University in May
1994. This is a massive, full-blown setting, with two quartets
of antiphonal herald trumpets, full orchestra, organ, SATB massed
chorus, congregation, the whole kit and kaboodle. I was asked
in 2005 by Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church in Moraga, CA to
reorchestrate the arrangement for a more standard orchestra,
and no herald trumpets. It was also used at the opening worship
of the National Convention of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran
Church in 2005. The exact instrumentation is 2222, 4431, timpani,
percussion (2), harp, organ, strings and SATB chorus with optional
congregation on all the verses. I have since rearranged the accompaniment
twice for different occasions, so now I have settings for SATB,
optional congregation, brass septet and organ, or for SATB, optional
congregation, and wind ensemble.
Alouette (SAB chorus, flute
and piano) Duration: 3'15 " (Kallman Creates Publications)
A playful arrangement of the popular French Canadian folk
song.
CHORAL SCORE: $1.75
FLUTE PART: $2.00
I was commissioned to arrange this setting for the Southeastern
Minnesota Honors Chorale (grades 6-8) for their 2002 summer tour
to Canada. It is fun and accessible to youth ensembles with boys
whose voices have recently changed. The flute part contains a
hint of the Canadian national anthem as a tribute to the country
of its origin. It was premiered at the International Choral Kathaumixw
(try to pronounce that one with crackers in your mouth -
or even without) at Powell River, British Columbia, July 2002.
Alyeska: The Great Land (wind
ensemble, optional vocal solo) Duration: 9'00" (Kallman
Creates Publications)
An expansive portrayal capturing the magnitude of the Alaskan
land, history, and peoples. (Level/Grade 5)
FULL SCORE - $25; SET OF PARTS - $130 (or set of masters for
you to copy - $105)
Program notes:
I am honored to have this opportunity to create a new work for
the Minnesota Symphonic Winds 2006 concert tour to Alaska. It
was suggested that I incorporate the state song Alaska's Flag
within the composition, and after visiting the state and realizing
the fondness many Alaskans feel for their song, I chose to use
both the text and tune to begin the work. The melody returns
again toward the end, arranged for the full ensemble. The
title I have chosen for the composition employs the earlier form
of the name given the area centuries ago by the Aleutians, one
of the state's ten nations of indigenous peoples, and it means
simply "the great land."
The work is in one continuous movement but contains three
distinct sections, following the statement of Alaska's Flag.
These sections may be viewed as chronological, although the music
is never intended to depict or respond to any specific historical
event. The first section grew out of my understanding of the
fascinating history of the land, wildlife, and the people of
"the great land," from the very ancient past when the
fantastic and monumental geographical formations were created
over eons, to the appearance of the first humans in the area
anywhere from twelve to forty thousand years ago. The music is
a "birthing" of this wide expanse of land and history.
A foreboding figure in the low woodwinds introduces the second
section, which builds in intensity to eventually include the
entire band in energetic outbursts. This is music of survival,
adventure, conquest, discovery--all themes which figured prominently
over the centuries before statehood in 1959 and with which many
Alaskans continue to grapple.
The melody of the state song reappears in the third section,
first serenely and tentatively, then building to a grandiose
celebration of statehood and hope for the future, as Alaska continues
to develop its vast potential of human and other resources. An
extended coda brings the composition to a close with an intentional
avoidance of finality and resolution, as Alaskans will continue
to face many challenges in the coming years, the most imminent being
those brought on by global climate change.
Thanks again to Tim Mahr, the Minnesota Symphonic Winds, and
band members Gary and Claire Nelson for commissioning this project.

Amazing Grace (SATB, piano)
Duration: 5'15" (Morning Star Music Publishers)
Gospel swing setting that transitions to a peaceful, introspective
finish.
This is an arrangement of the beloved hymn text by John Newton
and well-known tune from the Virginia Harmony, 1831. It is used
primarily in worship but is also appropriate in concert settings
for high school, college and community groups. A recording may
be obtained from the publisher.
Amazing Grace (two violins,
piano) Duration: 4'30" (Morning Star Music Publishers)
Gospel swing instrumental setting that transitions to a peaceful,
introspective finish.
This setting was commissioned by the Solovey Strings and is
a similar treatment of the tune that I have created in the choral
version (without singing or text, of course.) It is available
in a set called Three Hymns For Two
Violins and Piano from Morning Star Music Publishers.
The other hymn arrangements in the set are "Children of
the Heavenly Father" and "Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead
Us". All three of the arrangements are included on the recording
"Sacred Heirlooms" which is available from Morning
Star.
An American Jubilee (brass choir)
Duration: 4'20" (Kallman Creates Publications)
Driving, energetic rhythms over shifting meters provide a
satisfying challenge for college or professional players.
SCORE AND PARTS - $68.00
I was commissioned by Miles (Mity) Johnson to compose this
work for the brass members of the St. Olaf College Concert Band.
The piece is scored for six trumpets (B-flat), eight french horns,
two euphoniums (bass clef), six trombones and two tubas. It is
quite demanding both technically and rhythmically. It was premiered
under the baton of Tim Mahr in 1997. A concert recording is available
from St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN.
An American Tapestry (flute,
oboe, clarinet, bassoon, alto sax, tenor sax, 2 horns, trumpet,
trombone, tuba) Duration: 6'45"
(Boosey & Hawkes)
Players from high school through professional have enjoyed
the unique instrumentation and colorful harmonies that enliven
this medley of folk songs.
Commissioned in 2003 by a consortium of ten Minnesota high
schools, this work for chamber winds is a continuous medley of
three American folk tunes: The Girl I Left Behind Me, She's
Gone Away and Ol' Dan Tucker. It was performed by
all of the schools in the spring and fall of 2003 and I was fortunate
to conduct several of the performances. Since publication in
the Windependence Series (Boosey & Hawkes), the piece has
become quite popular and is on many repertoire lists for chamber
wind music.
And On Earth, Peace (SATB chorus,
winds, organ, harp, piano, percussion)
Duration: Opening - 2'00"; Closing: 9'15"(Kallman Creates
Publications)
A serene opening leads to a musical depiction of a broken
peace, transcended by healing and grace as the work culminates
in an extended jubilant Gloria.
CHORAL SCORE (Opening and Closing) - $3.25
FULL SCORE (Opening and Closing) - $35
INSTRUMENTAL PARTS (Opening and Closing) - RENTAL (inquire for
fee)
This was commissioned by my alma mater, Luther College, for their
Christmas concert, Juletide Fest 1995. Timothy Peter conducted
the three premiere performances. The text, by Christine Kallman,
is printed below. There is an optional two-minute prelude which
Luther used to open the concert. They performed the longer closing
segment (which ends with a huge "Gloria in excelsis Deo!")
as the final piece on the program. The complete instrumentation
is 2221, 4331 plus euphonium (bass clef), timpani, percussion
(3 players), organ, harp and piano (no strings). And On Earth,
Peace works very well with massed choirs placed antiphonally
throughout a larger auditorium, so it is especially well suited
for colleges with more than one choral ensemble. Contact me for
a recording.
There is quiet at the dawning of the day,
A quiet that awaits the awakening of souls,
As all that God intends is given birth,
And Jesus is the Lord of all the garden of the earth.
There is healing in the fullness of the light,
A healing that begins in the terror of the night.
While splinters of the peace we shattered fly,
You, o wounded one, are gently putting things to right.
Did we believe the earth could be so new,
The knots untied, the torture through,
Judgment exchanged for beauteous grace?
Stand tall all prisoners of the human race!
There is victory in the coming of the Lord,
A wider, fuller peace than any soul has ever known.
What daring love is this which grants us stand
Redeemed and whole and holding the triumphant Prince's hand!
We praise our Lord's dear name with all our power!
His is the reign, this the hour!
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Ballad, Rag and Cakewalk (oboe
and guitar) Duration: 9'00" (Kallman Creates Publications)
Three original pieces based on American folk styles in an
intimate chamber setting.
SCORE AND PARTS - $44
In 1991 Merilee Klemp, oboist and Chris Kachian, guitarist commissioned
this three movement suite. They have performed the work several
times, including in recital at the International Double Reed
Society Convention in 1993. Merilee also performed the pieces
with guitarist Jeffrey Van at the concert honoring my teacher,
Dominick Argento, upon his retirement from the University Of
Minnesota in November 1997. Merilee and Chris included Ballad,
Rag and Cakewalk on the programs for their fall tour 1999,
including a performance at the Church of the Holy Trinity in
New York City. They also have now recorded the work on their
202 CD entitled Falls Flyer, a production of the Schubert Club
of St. Paul, MN. You may contact them at http://schubert.org.
The work is fairly challenging to play (particularly for the
guitarist) but is immediately accessible to the listener.
Behold a Host ( two violins
and piano) Duration: 3'45" (Morning Star Music Publishers)
Meditative setting of the Norwegian folk tune made popular
by Edvard Grieg.
This arrangement was commissioned by the Solovey Strings.
It is available in a set called Two
Hymns for Violin and Piano from Morning Star. The other
work in the set is In the Garden.
Borning Cry (SATB or two-part
mixed voices, flute, piano) Duration: 3'20" (Morning
Star Music)
John Ylvisaker's best-known worship song in two choral arrangements.
This is a setting of John Ylvisaker's very popular text and
tune which I completed for my niece's confirmation several years
ago. The two-part version also works with solo voices. This has
been one of my best-selling arrangements through Morning Star.
The Canticle of Brother Sun
(SATB chorus, organ) Duration: 9'00" (Kallman Creates
Publications)
St. Francis' poem in praise of creation appropriate for college,
community, and professional choirs.
CHORAL SCORE - $3.50
This setting was composed on commission from the Choral Arts
Ensemble of Rochester, Minnesota, a very fine adult community
chorus. The text is by St. Francis of Assisi. This is a fairly
challenging work and especially requires a fine organist. The
Choral Arts Ensemble has recorded the piece on a CD called "Minnesota
Voices", with Lee Afdahl at the organ and Rick Kvam conducting.
You may obtain that recording by contacting the Choral Arts Ensemble.
Caged Bird (SSA and
SATB youth choirs, solo tenor, flute and piano) Duration:
9'00"(Kallman Creates Publications)
Maya Angelou's passionate poem combines with two spirituals
in this tribute to freedom.
FULL CHORAL SCORE: $3.50
CHORAL PARTS (ONLY): $2.50
FLUTE PART: $3.00
I was commissioned to compose this work for the 10th anniversary
of the Hermantown Youth Choirs/ Lake Superior Youth Chorus. I
conducted the premiere which took place in May 2003 in Duluth,
MN, with the combined unison, treble and SATB choruses of LSYC.
The primary text for this extended work is a wonderful poem by
Maya Angelou by the same title. Also embedded in the piece are
two spirituals, Woke Up this Mornin' and Freedom Train's
A Comin'. Here is the Angelou poem:
CAGED BIRD
A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Chamber Suite (chamber orchestra)
Duration: 11'45" (Kallman Creates Publications)
Solo winds and clear string writing charcterize this three-movement
work accessible to higher level high school orchestras and above.
SCORE AND PARTS - RENTAL (inquire for fee)
This was written for the First Unitarian Society Orchestra
(Minneapolis) in 1985 when Cary John Franklin was their conductor.
I was very deliberate not to create an overly challenging score,
especially for the strings, so this work is definitely accessible
to the average amateur community orchestra. It is in three movements,
and the exact instrumentation is 2222, 2200, percussion (one
player), piano and strings. A recording is available.
Charity and Love (SATB with
alto solo, organ, flute, clarinet, opt. handbells; or SATB with
alto solo and chamber orchestra) 4'45" (Kjos Music)
Early plainchant in a rich, meditative setting.
This is one of three pieces I was asked to arrange for the
Pax Christi Award Ceremony at St. John's University in 1994.
The recipient of the award was Amy Grant, and she sang this after
accepting the award. It is based on the plainchant "Ubi
Caritas." Both the orchestral version and the reduced octavo
version, as well as a recording of the latter, are available
from Kjos Music. A video of the St. John's event is available
on YouTube under the title, "Amy Grant: Music of the Spirit."
The orchestration was listed incorrectly on the back of the Kjos
octavo and in their catalog. The correct instrumentation is 2
flutes, oboe, English horn, 2 clarinets (B-flat), 2 bassoons,
4 horns, percussion (1 or 2 players), harp and strings.
A Child's Carol (SATB a cappella)
Duration: 1'30" (Kallman Creates Publications)
This simple carol was awarded first prize in Toronto's 1986
Amadeus Carol Competition.
CHORAL SCORE - $1.50
This is a simple setting in two verses of a lyric by Christine
Kallman:
A stroke of starlight comes to fall,
Through broken eaves, on cradle small.
With little steps I take my place
To peer into a shining face.
My heartbeats quicken at the stall;
I cannot take a breath at all!
The babe's lips part to my delight
And soon sweet laughter fills the night.
Oh Jesus! how much loving came
Contained within your human frame.
Please tell me, Lord, how this can be
When you are just a child like me?
Oh, Daddy, carry me to bed,
For slumber crowns my little head.
The infant Jesus' love so dear
Surround me on my pillow here.

This arrangement was commissioned by the Solovey Strings and
is contained in Three Hymns for Two
Violins and Piano. The score, parts and a recording ("Sacred
Heirlooms") are available from the publisher.

Lilting piano accompaniment, interweaving vocal lines, and
violin countermelodies provide elegant textures for this popular
Swedish hymn.
Christ The Promise Of Tomorrow
- HYMN VERSION (unison voices, keyboard) 3'00"(Kallman
Creates Publications)
A hymn of hope for congregational singing.
SINGLE COPY - $1.00
LICENSE FEE FOR CONGREGATIONAL USE - Inquire for fee
This is among my favorite of several hymn tunes I've written,
primarily because of the wonderful text by my wife, Christine.
She wrote it at the end of the millenium, but its message is
timeless. Here is the text:
CHRIST, THE PROMISE OF TOMORROW
Christ, the Promise of tomorrow,
Prince of Ages, take our hand.
Lead us through the coming era;
Fearful, at the doors we stand.
Blind we are beyond this moment,
Sightless creatures, bound to sin.
Now to courage you are calling:
"Throw the doors wide! Enter in!"
Through the stormy march of decades
Like a shelter you have stood,
Faithfully your arms extending,
Bending, granting all things good.
From the heaven's fiery giants
To the minnow in the sea,
You have blessed your whole creation,
You profess your love for me.
In the wreck of human failings,
Trust is spoiled and hopes are few.
'Bolden us with this assurance:
You are making all things new.
As partakers in the promise
Of your excellent design,
Let us strive for truth and justice
Let your love our works define.
Praise to God who holds the order
Of both time and space aright,
Spins the marvels of creation
In the darkness and the light.
Praise to God who walks beside us,
Pledging joy beyond all tears
Through the advent of this thousand
And ten thousand thousand years.

Christ, The Promise of Tomorrow
(anthem version for SATB, opt. treble choir or treble solo, flute,
organ, handbells)
(Kallman Creates Publications)
Hope overflows in this anthem in praise of Christ, our Fount
of living waters.
CHORAL SCORE: $2.00 (Handbell parts incl. in the score)
FLUTE PART: $2.00 Duration: 5' 30"
This work was commissioned by Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames,
Iowa in celebration of their centennial in 2005. The text below
is by Christine Kallman, adapted from her original hymn text.
The work incorporates the tune Ebenezer, which may be sung by
the congregation on the final verse.
Christ, the Promise of tomorrow,
Prince of Ages, take our hand.
Lead us through the coming era;
Fearful, at the doors we stand.
Blind we are beyond this moment,
Sightless creatures, bound to sin.
Now to courage you are calling:
"Throw the doors wide! Enter in!"
Christ, the Fount of Living Waters
Flood with love our thirsty souls
Till your grace, an endless ocean,
Works to cleanse us, makes us whole.
"Come to me," you bid the weary,
"Freely drink this life outpoured."
Quenched by your forgiving presence,
Hope, once barren, is restored.
Gracious Spirit now among us
Swell your banks and overflow
From the hearts of all believers
Through the tenderness we show,
That the wounded may find healing,
Peace our world cannot destroy,
Fed by streams of loving service,
Deserts blossom into joy!
Praise to God who holds the order
Of both time and space aright,
Spins the marvels of creation
In the darkness and the light.
Praise to God who walks beside us,
Pledging joy beyond all tears
Through the advent of this thousand
And ten thousand thousand years.

Come All Ye Shepherds (SSAATTBB
a cappella) Duration: 2'50" (G. Schirmer Music)

of the shepherds as they share the Good News.
I arranged this carol in 1980 for the Eau Claire (WI) Musical
Arts Chorale. This setting and Rocking
Carol, were my first publications.
Come Make a Home (unison, 2-
or 3-part treble choir, piano [intermediate, advanced, or piano

Duration 5'00" (Kallman Creates Publications)
This uplifting anthem celebrates the vision of early settlers
that lives on in our communities.
CHORAL SCORE - $2.00
FLUTE PART - $2.00
This piece was commissioned for the Northfield Youth Choirs
(Northfield, MN) in honor of the city's sesquicentennial in 2005,
with text (below) by Christine Kallman (alternate text in brackets).
It was premiered at the Governor's Ball in Northfield in Decemeber
2005, under conductor Liz Shepley. The choir was then asked to
perform it at the opening session of the Minnesota State Legislature
in March of 2006. Dance movements for the choir were choreographed
by Shari Setchell, who also performed as a solo dancer.
Come Make a Home
Where prairie meets woodland a river runs free
Through a plentiful valley as old as the sea.
Brave women and men, heed the summons within
To shoulder your bundles and boldly begin.
Carve a canoe that will cut through the current,
A wagon to navigate uphill and down,
Carry your newly born visions with care
Like a child to a place I have found.
Pack up your fiddle and a longing in you
To make what is lovely and love what is true.
Secure these, with justice, as grounding beneath
Every barn that you build, every house, every street.
Sink timbers of fairness to anchor your mills.
For schooling and worship lift high the crossbeams.
Through winters so cold it makes strong oxen freeze,
My friends, heft the weight of your dreams.
Refrain:
Dance in Bridge Square [the square] to the song of the fountain,
Cast in the Cannon [river] for fat fish to fry.
We have seeds in the ground and cows out to pasture;
The storefronts are bursting with good things to buy.
From the red brick hotel to the high halls of learning,
A train whistle echoes its greeting of old.
I've planted my heart where I know there's contentment.
Where prairie meets woodland, come make a home.
By pickup or Greyhound, on foot in the night,
From west or from east in a desperate flight,
Come as a stranger and stay as a friend,
Though conflict arises or hardships descend.
Keep hope for a future united in peace
and courage to ask ourselves, "Who can we be?"
When trouble like bandits rides into our town,
We hold fast to the things we believe.

Come, They Told Me (SATB, winds,
organ, piano, percussion) Duration: Opening - 2'00";

This work was commissioned by Millikin University in Decatur,
Illinois, for performance in December, 2001. Brad Holmes had
chosen a holiday program that involved percussion, and he requested
that I write a closing for mass choirs and instrumentalists that
would incorporate three groups of antiphonal percussion. I decided
to base the work on two well-known carols, the French folk song
Pat-A-Pan and The Little Drummer Boy by American Katherine Kay
Davis. The instrumentation for the work is 2222, 4431, timpani,
percussion (seven players in three groups), organ and SATB chorus.
The first two minutes of the piece were also used to open the
concert at Millikin. The entire piece ends with an exciting Cuban
"samba-esque" treatment of the tune, with the choirs
singing emphatically, "And so we pray your peace may come,
let your peace come, your peace will come!"
Come, Thou Almighty King (SATB,
2 trumpets, trombone, organ) 4'00" (Kallman Creates

A festive setting of a great hymn, easily learned by even
smaller church choirs.
CHORAL SCORE: $1.85; BRASS PARTS (SET): $10.00
I wrote this setting in 1980 for the choir and instrumentalists

Come To Your Mommy (SSA, harp)

A soothing Canadian lullaby.
This is the first lullaby in my set of three for treble voices

Treble Voices and Harp.
Cows (SA, piano) 4'20''
(Kallman Creates Publications)
Cows converse about the weather over a laid-back, bluesy accompaniment.
CHORAL SCORE: $1.70
This is a lazy, jazz-influenced setting of James Reeves' poem
(below). The dialogue between the two cows, sung by different
soloists, is conversational in style, offering a contrast to
the bluesy feel of the refrain. There are opportunities to make
cow and other barnyard noises. Here's the poem:
Half the time they munched the grass and all the time they
lay
Down in the watermeadows, the lazy month of May,
A-chewing, A-moo-ing,
To pass the hours away.
"Nice weather", said the brown cow.
"Ah", said the white.
"Grass is very tasty."
"Grass is alright."
Half the time they munched the grass...
"Rain coming," said the brown cow.
"Ah", said the white.
"Flies is very tiresome"
"Flies really bite."
Half the time they munched the grass...
"Time to go," said the brown cow.
"Ah", said the white.
"Nice chat."
"Very pleasant."
"'Night."
"Nighty-night."
Half the time they munched the grass...
A Cradle Song (SSAA, piano four-hands)
4'20" (Kallman Creates Publications)
"Golden slumbers kiss your eyes" in this gentle
lullaby.
SET - $3.60 ; INDIVIDUAL - $1.60
This is the second piece in Three About Babies, a primarily
SATB set I was commissioned to write for the Meistersingers of
Cherry Creek High School, Colorado. Here is the text, by Elizabethan
dramatist Thomas Dekker:
Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise;
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.
Care is heavy, therefore sleep you,
You are care, and care must keep you;
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.

Where midnight clouds will roll,
Awake the hidden fountain

That cover your delight.

CHORAL SCORE - $1.75; CELLO PART - $2.00
Herb Brokering and I were asked to compose the text and tune
for this anthem in response to the death of Kirsten Evenrud Ringo,
daughter of our close friend, Jerry Evenrud. The scoring of the
accompaniment for cello and organ is intentional, as Kirsten
was a cellist and her father is an organist. I think you'll agree
that Herb has penned another gem of a text (printed below). I
suggest printing it in the bulletin separately when you offer
the work as a worship or concert anthem. Herb and I would like
to donate half of the profits we earn from this anthem to Holden
Village, a Lutheran retreat tucked away in the beautiful Cascade
Mountains of central Washington. Holden is a place where the
Evenrud and Brokering families have spent considerable time together
over the decades. It is also where I met Jerry in 1987. Holden
relies heavily upon individual donations in order to meet its
budget, so Herb, Jerry and I are happy to offer you the opportunity
to help serve Holden's ministry by purchasing the anthem.

Minnesota, in December of 1998, is a welcome addition to holiday
repertoire that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Cast requirements

DONATA'S GIFT
Book and Lyrics by Christine Kallman
Musical Score by Daniel Kallman
Donata's Gift, a musical for the holiday season, draws its
inspiration from the Italian legend of Old Befana, the folk tale
benefactress who showers Italian children with gifts at Epiphany.
This is not a straight retelling of the Befana legend. In
this original story, Donata is a lonely and bitter old woman
in a small sixteenth century Italian village. Although it is
the Christmas season, the villagers are foolish and bickering,
and Donata, who is merely eccentric, is whispered to be a witch.
Then, due to a mistake by the bumbling and forgetful Sister Roma,
Donata is openly accused of stealing the altar candlesticks from
the cathedral. Signor Alfredo, the scheming but gullible master
of the orphanage who would like to impress the Constable in order
to get a better job, sets out with his bullying sons, Antonio
and Lino, to prove Donata guilty.
But Alfredo and the town are turned upside down by the arrival
of two new orphans, Lucia and her little brother Benito. Despite
the poor circumstances of the orphans and Antonio's threats,
Lucia is not afraid to raise the hopes of the orphans that Old
Befana will come with gifts and leads them in celebrating the
Christmas season right under Signor Alfredo's nose. Nor is Lucia
shy in pestering Donata to assure them that Old Befana will bring
gifts to the children, although the girl's hopes are dashed when
she also becomes a suspect in the theft. In a dream scene, the
Magi visit Donata just as they visited Old Befana in the legend.
Their presence calls her to put aside bitterness and spread the
gifts she has, just as Old Befana brought gifts to the Christ
Child. Donata is afraid, but finally becomes convinced, in the
song "Our World Needs This Child." On the morning of
Epiphany, the orphans find that Old Befana has brought them all
gifts. Donata and Lucia are exonerated, and even Signor Alfredo
cannot remain unmoved as the story closes.
Humor permeates the play, from Donata's clever outwitting
of Alfredo by pretending to call back his dead grandmother, to
Sister Roma's fainting spells, to Alfredo's self-important reflection
on fatherhood in "Advice Song". Other songs emphasize
the play at appearances: the villagers' pretense of getting along
("Peaceful Life"), Benito's ludicrous show of power
("You Look Out"), and Donata's icy exterior which masks
a terrible longing ("Donata's Lullaby"). But hope predominates,
in the orphan's joyous invocation of Befana ("Hurry, Hurry")
and the villagers' attempts at a new start ("Something Good
Will Happen").

Fanfares For Nine Trumpets (nine trumpets or herald trumpets
in B-flat) 4'00 (Kallman Creates Publications)
The trumpet section of your wind ensemble struts their
stuff with this concert opener.(Level/Grade 5)
SCORE AND PARTS - $40
These three fanfares were commissioned by Philip Brunelle in
1995. They are moderately difficult and are intended for antiphonal
playing ( 3 choirs of 3 trumpets each).
Fantasia Variations on "Eternal
Alleluias" (wind ensemble) 9'15" (TRN Music)
Kallman's appealing hymn tune transports us from the reverent
to the exuberant in this theme with variations. (Level/Grade
5)
This work was commissioned by the Austin (MN) High School Concert
Band (my alma mater) and received its premiere in 1991 under
the baton of Brian Koser. It is based on my hymn "Let
Us Raise Eternal Alleluias". The work is fairly challenging
for high school ensembles and has received most of its subsequent
performances by college and community bands. Both the hymn and
the band piece are published by TRN Music, Ruidoso, NM.
Fantasy and Scherzo (violin,
piano) 9'00" (Kallman Creates Publications)
A passionate rhapsody, a rollicking gallop. For advanced
players.
SCORE AND PARTS -$30
This piece was premiered in 1985 by then 14-year-old prodigy
Brian Krinke. I was a T.A. at the University of Minnesota and
gave the piece to Brian who had been my student (Freshman Theory
as a 12-year old!). Two weeks later he was playing it from memory.
Farewell Amos (piano solo or
piano four-hands) 3'00" (Kallman Creates Publications)
A haunting lament for advanced intermediate players.
SOLO - $5.00
FOUR-HANDS - $8.00
I wrote this piece in 1987 when the Minnesota Composers Forum
(now the American Composers Forum) sponsored a yearly contest
for new compositions for piano four-hands. (It was chosen as
one of the six finalists and won me $100 on an applause-o-meter!!)
The title refers to the Old Testament prophet Amos, a voice I
feel needs to be heeded in a wealthy America, where a quarter
of our children still live in poverty.
A Farm Child's Lullaby (soprano solo voice, piano)
Duration: 3'00'' (Kallman Creates Publications)
The harvest is in, you're tucked in bed, and all is right
at the end of the day.
SCORE: $6.00
This was a gift to my oldest daughter, Brittany, on her 17th
birthday. It is a setting of a lovely short poem by the American
poet Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906). Brittany premiered it
on a full recital in early June 2001. She used it on the program
within a set of two other lullabies that I have arranged: Donata's
Lullaby (from Donata's Gift)
and Thy Holy Wings. I think
A Farm Child's Lullaby works nicely as a mellow encore
on a recital. It is appropriate for the intermediate to advanced
singer. Here is the text:
Oh, the little bird is rocking in the cradle of the wind,
And it's bye, my little wee one, bye;
The harvest is all gathered and the pippins are all binned,
So it's bye my little wee one, bye;
The little rabbit's hiding in the golden shock of corn,
The thrifty squirrel is laughing bunny's idleness to scorn;
You are smiling with the angels in your slumber, smile till morn;
So it's bye my little wee one, bye;
It's bye my little wee one, bye.
Why the bobwhite thinks the snowflake is a brother to his
song,
And it's bye, my little wee one, bye;
And the chimney sings the sweeter when the wind is blowing strong,
So it's bye my little wee one, bye;
The snow may be a-flying o'er the meadow and the hill,
The ice has checked the chatter of the little laughing rill,
But in your cosy cradle you are warm and cosy still;
So it's bye my little wee one, bye;
It's bye my little wee one, bye.

Fidelitas (full orchestra, narrator)
14'00" (Kallman Creates Publications)
The stirring and elequent words of Lincoln, Thoreau, Whitman
and contemporaries frame this tribute to heroism, faithfulness,
and self-sacrifice. High school, college, community ensembles.
SCORE, ORCH. PARTS, NARRATOR SCORE - RENTAL (inquire for fee)
Fidelitas is a work which celebrates heroism. It was
co-commissioned by the Defeat of Jesse James Committee, St, Olaf
College and Carleton College to celebrate the 125th anniversary
of the defeat of the James gang when they attempted a bank robbery
in the town on September 7, 1876. It also honors Joseph Lee Heywood,
the bank teller who was murdered during the raid and whose bravery
may have saved the small town's fortunes and .
I composed Fidelitas in June and July of 2001, and
it was premiered at an outdoor concert at Carleton College on
September 8, 2001 with the Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra,
conducted by Paul Niemisto and narrated by Will Healy. Below
are the program notes from the premiere. Following the notes
are selected quotes from the narration. The full narration is
available for perusal, and includes the words of American writers
Thoreau, Emerson, Lincoln, and Whitman, and poignant excerpts
from the homily at Heywood's funeral.
PROGRAM NOTES - FIDELITAS (Premiere performance
Sept. 8, 2001)
Joseph Lee Heywood, the substitute bank teller who was murdered
during the robbery exactly 125 years ago yesterday, is commemorated
in a stained glass window at the United Church of Christ in Northfield.
On this window is inscribed the word "Fidelitas", the
Latin word from which we derive the word "fidelity"
and which describes the noble character of a person who remains
steadfast, honest and faithful to their purpose or calling in
life.
To set the stage for the narration, three musical themes are
introduced. The first is of an heroic, uplifting nature. A brief
transition leads to a more tranquil, lyric melody, initially
presented in the strings alone, then repeated with woodwinds.
A second transition is interrupted by drums and trumpets, and
a popular Civil War song, "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp", is
given full treatment by the entire orchestra. This tune was chosen
to symbolize the profound impact that the war had on the events
which took place in Northfield more than a decade after the end
of the conflict. There is ample evidence to suggest that revenge
was a factor behind the Southern outlaws' targeting of Northfield
for the robbery. But the violence alone which they witnessed
as young men (Cole and Jim Younger's father was brutally murdered
by Northern sympathizers when they were quite young; Jesse James
himself at sixteen was beaten and left for dead by men who were
anti-South) led to the acts of brutality in which they subsequently
participated before, during and following the war. While not
excusing the criminal life which the outlaws chose, it is certainly
possible to see the connection.
The quotation of the Civil War tune ends in a tumult, gradually
subsiding into more serene music which underscores the narration
and is compiled from several sources. The initial quotations
are from well-known American voices of the nineteenth century:
Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman and Abraham
Lincoln. These statements on morality, virtue, character and
heroism segue to a musical interlude which introduces Heywood's
"theme". The more substantial middle section of narration
is excerpted from the eloquent discourse delivered at Heywood's
funeral on September 10, 1876 by the Reverend D.L. Leonard, then
pastor of the UCC church. Following the excerpt from the eulogy,
this theme is heard again in a more heroic setting, leading to
the final narrative which consists of further statements from
the same famous Americans.
The words and music of Fidelitas should be heard as
more than a tribute to one man. The composition was created to
remember and celebrate all those qualities that we as humans
can and should aspire to: honesty, faithfulness, self-sacrifice
- essential elements in a society where people live in peace
and harmony with one another.
FIDELITAS NARRATION (selected quotes)
Our whole life is startlingly moral. There is never an instance's
truce between virtue and vice. Goodness is the only investment
that never fails. (Thoreau)
I understand the large hearts of heroes, the courage of present
times and all times. (Whitman)
Heroism is an obedience to a secret impulse of an individual's
character...but whoso is heroic will always find crises to try
his edge. Human virtue demands her champions and martyrs, and
the trial of persecution always proceeds. (Emerson)
It is the eternal struggle between two principles - right
and wrong - throughout the world. (Lincoln)
The Five Little Chickens (SA,
piano) 3'00" (Shawnee/Mark Foster)
The chickens' dilemma erupts in a barnyard flurry of clucking
and squawking!
This was first performed by the Northfield (MN) Youth Choirs
in 1990. The poem is an anonymous little ditty about some chickens
that are looking for a bite to eat. The chorus parts are not
difficult, and the piano part is fun as it scratches and clucks
along. (The children get to squawk at the end, too!)
Five Short Attitudes (piano

Concise miniatures for the advanced player.

The five movements are: I. Frolicsome, II. Tranquil, III.
Skittish, IV. Hesitant, V. Brash.
Forecasts (saxophone quartet)
12'00" (Kallman Creates Publications)
The forecast is partly whimsical giving way to dissonances
in this four-movement suite for advanced players.
SCORE AND PARTS $56.00 (Kallman Creates, publ.)
Most frequently performed of all my chamber pieces, Forecasts
has been programmed in the U.S. and Europe, including a performance
at the World Saxophone Congress in Spain in 1997. The movement
titles are : I. Flurries, II. Leit and Variable Winds, III. Dense
Fog, IV. Acid Rain. The final segment presumes the unfortunate
scenario of a futuristic forecast consisting of several distorted
fragments of popular songs about rain. Hopefully, these are disguised
enough to avoid copyright hassles while not upsetting the pH
balance of the listener. A recording, "The Sax Ascendant",
is available from the American Composers Forum.
Four Canticles (bass trombone,

Four from "Whiskers and
Rhymes" (SA, piano, opt. clarinet, opt. violin) 6'30"
(available under four separate titles from Shawnee/Mark Foster)
Lobel's beloved poems wedded to memorable melodies and
interwoven with colorful accompaniments.
These pieces are settings of four wonderful children's poems
by Arnold Lobel from his book Whiskers and Rhymes. They
are available as separate octavos from Shawnee Press, formerly
Mark Foster Music Company. I wrote them as a set for the 1996-97
Minnesota ACDA Elementary Honors Choir. While I prefer that they
be performed as a set, they do work fine as individual pieces.
The order and titles are: I. I Will
Give You The Key; II. The Mending
Song; III. Friendly Fredrick Fuddlestone;
IV. This Lamp In My Window. The
accompaniment is for piano and optional clarinet, but an alternate
violin part is available (and preferred) for Friendly Fredrick
Fuddlestone, since Mr. Lobel tells us that he "fiddled
on his funnybone". Since being published in 1998, these
four have been among the best sellers in Cora Scholz's series
with Mark Foster along with my other pieces in the series: The Pasture, The
Five Little Chickens, Thy Holy Wings
Lizard Jazz, and Three
Lullabies for Treble Voices and Harp. You may click on
the individual titles for more info.
Friendly Fredrick Fuddlestone
(SA, violin [fiddle] or clarinet) 1'30" (Shawnee/Mark
Foster)
A foot-stompin', barn-burnin' hoedown for your young singers!
This is the third in a set of four musical settings of wonderful
texts by Arnold Lobel from his book Whiskers and Rhymes.
I was commissioned to write them for the 1996-97 ACDA Minnesota
Elementary Honors Choir, and they have since been published as
separate octavos by Shawnee Press/Mark Foster Music. Friendly
Fredrick Fuddlestone is a rollicking hoedown for 2-part children's
chorus, piano and fiddle ( or clarinet, which is used on the
other pieces in the set). It has been a bestseller since being
published. The singers even get to do some foot-stompin' and
hand clappin' at the end. See also Four
From "Whiskers and Rhymes".
A Future With Hope (SSAATTBB,
a cappella) 5'45" (Kallman Creates Publications)
Sacred words of hope, embedded in a warm choral fabric,
lead us from questioning to acceptance and healing.
CHORAL SCORE: $ 2.60
This work was commissioned for the Nordic Choir of Luther
College by the family of David Winter, a classmate of mine at
Luther and a member of Nordic in the late 1970's. After years
of living honorably with a debilitating disease, David died of
multiple sclerosis in 1999, and this anthem was written to his
memory. It is also dedicated by the Winter family to Weston Noble,
conductor of the choir and a mentor and friend to David during
his illness. The biblical texts are taken from Jeremiah, Isaiah
and the Gospel of John. Many of these texts were a source of
comfort to David and his family during the course of his illness
and some were read at his funeral. Nordic premiered the work
in May 2003, and they also performed it a dozen times on their
European tour the following month. Here is the text:
Is there any word from the Lord? There is!
"You shall be a people in exile,
But when you are sent
Build your houses, plant your gardens,
Marry and have sons and daughters.
Be my people there.
And seek he welfare of the city where I have sent you,
And pray to the Lord on its behalf."
Is there any word from the Lord? There is!
"You have a future with hope!
For the days are surely coming
When I will raise up for David a righteous branch.
And he shall reign as a wise king,
And shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
For surely I know the plans I have for you,
Plans for your welfare and not for harm.
To give you a future with hope!
For I have called you by name and you are mine.
I have brought you back from where I sent you.
I have let you find me again, and I will restore you.
I have unbound you and let you go."
Amen. May the Lord do so.

A Garden Of My Own (SA or SAB,
flute, piano) 4'30" (Kallman Creates Publications)
Arrangement of an inspirational text and tune, for high
school treble or mixed choirs.
CHORAL SCORE: $ 1.85
This is an arrangement of a lovely tune and text by Patricia
McKernon Runkle. She originally wrote the song in the '90's to
honor Rosalie Wahl, the first woman to serve on the Minnesota
Supreme Court, upon the occasion of her retirement. This choral
setting was commissioned by Plymouth Congregational Church in
Minneapolis and premiered in the fall of 2003 by the Plymouth
Youth Choir with Patricia conducting. Here is the text:
(Refrain:)
There's a place where dreams are gathered, There's a soil where
seeds are sown,
There's a light beyond the shadows where truths are known.
In this light I reach for heaven, In this soil I root my soul,
In this place I have a garden of my own.
Time was I was up at dawn and eager for the field,
Time was I was welded to the plough,
Time was I would work as hard as flesh and bone allow
Till the glory of the harvest was revealed.
These days I am on my knees with flowers in my hands,
These days I refuse to plant in rows,
These days I can feel a seedling tremble as it grows,
And the heartland deep within me understands.
Who knows whether time and quiet faith bring something new,
Who knows if I learn to improvise?
Who knows if a flower never seen before will rise
And the world will be the richer for its hue?
The Gift (SAB, organ) 3'00"
(Morning Star Music)
A contemplative setting for worship of a song by John Ylvisaker,
creator of "Borning Cry."
This is a simple setting of a wonderful tune and text by John
Ylvisaker. I arranged it in 1990 for my adult church choir (a
small choir at that time) at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield,
MN. We have used it primarily during the offering or during the
distribution at communion services. John's opening text begins
" O Lord, you've given up your life for me; I give my life
to you. And in the giving I receive the gift of giving, too."
Glorificamus Te! (SATB, piano)

12'30" (Kallman Creates Publications)
A medley of familiar carols climaxing in a gospel-rock
treatment of "Go Tell It on the Mountain." Accessible
to high school through professional.
CHORAL SCORES - $4.00
FULL SCORE AND PARTS - RENTAL (inquire for fee)
This medley of carols was commissioned for the combined chorus
and orchestra of Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minnesota.
It was premiered in December of 1994. The familiar carols are
"O Come, All Ye Faithful", "What Child Is This?",
and "Go Tell It On The Mountain." The final carol is
set in gospel-rock style. The exact instrumentation is 2222,
4331, timpani, percussion (2 players), strings, handbells (5
octaves) or keyboard, saxophones (optional: 2 alto, tenor and
baritone, but covered in other parts), electric bass and piano
(gospel style). The orchestration is not difficult and is definitely
playable by an average college orchestra and even good high school
ensembles. Doc Severinsen has conducted several performances
of this with the Minnesota Orchestra and Milwaukee Symphony.
The Groundhog's Lament (youth
wind ensemble) 2'30" (Boosey & Hawkes)
Gradual awakening, increasing anticipation, and stark disappointment
are in store for the groundhog on his big day in February. (Level/Grade
2-3)
This piece was commissioned by the American Composers Forum
and is published by Boosey & Hawkes in their Windependence
Series (Level/Grade 2-3). The program notes contained in the
score read: "Nestled down deep underground in its burrow,
a groundhog slumbers on well into the third month of a long winter's
nap, dreaming cozy dreams about the coming of a warm spring.
Suddenly it stirs, sensing a primal need to awaken. It yawns...stretches...then
remembers why it has woken up. It is February 2, a day set aside
specifically for the creature to perform an important task. Slowly,
still half asleep, it begins to make its way up from the burrow.
As it ascends, the anticipation of the coming moment gradually
awakens and excites the groundhog. Faster and faster it ascends
until, finally -- ah, fresh air! After a couple of magnificent
gulps, the animal remembers its purpose. It looks to the ground
and sees, alas, its own shadow! Disappointed (as will be so many
of the rest of us), the groundhog descends once again, finally
settling back down in the corner of its dark, cool underground
home. It resumes the long nap, hopeful that it still have a six
week supply of spring dreams to help it through the remainder
of winter hibernation."
Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
(SATB, trumpet, organ) 4'00" (Kallman Creates Publications)
A stirring setting of a favorite Welsh hymn to enhance
your worship.
This setting of CWM RHONDDA was commissioned by the First Presbyterian
Church of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania to honor their retired

of music to so many. It was premiered on an all-Kallman concert
in May, 2004. The first verse in Welsh is optional.

I was commissioned to write this work in 1990 by the Austin (MN)
Symphony Orchestra, the town where I was raised. It is a three
movement piece inspired by the history of that area of southern
Minnesota. Movement I traces the travels of the immigrant settlers
as they came to the new world and then westward to mid America.
It is loosely based on a Scandinavian folk tune which is now
known as the hymn tune for "Behold A Host". Movement
II is quite different in nature, taking a look at how industry
and technology transformed the area. It is minimalistic and highly
rhythmic as if to imitate the sounds of a factory. The ending
builds to a powerful climax, and as the final orchestral chord
cuts off at triple forte and dies away, the sound of a lone Native
American flute is heard in the distance. Movement III can be
used on its own. It is a set of theme and variations on Woody
Guthrie's " This Land is Your Land", complete with
audience participation. Heritage Renewed is written to
be well within the range of most good community orchestras, and
study scores and tapes are available from the publisher upon
request. The complete instrumentation is 3222, 4331, timpani,
percussion (3 players), piano, banjo (opt.), strings. I have
a good concert recording available by the Bloomington Symphony
with Steve Amundson conducting.

Garrison Keillor and Philip Brunelle asked me to write this for
Keillor's Christmas Special with the National Symphony in Washington
D.C. It was broadcast live nationwide on public radio in 1992.
Garrison asked me to fit as many familiar holiday tunes as possible
into a five minute orchestral piece, specifically requesting
that I close with a quote of Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus"
from the Messiah. (It wouldn't have been my choice, but
when you're a poor starving composer, you don't argue with genius!)
It has since received numerous performances by orchestras throughout
the country. Holiday Hoedown is available from MMB Music
in St. Louis by visiting <www.mmbmusic.com> or by calling
800-543-3771. They also have a good demo recording.

This was a commission from the St. Croix Valley Boy Choir based
in Hudson, Wisconsin, in honor of their 20th anniversary season.
The text (below) is by Irish poet Joseph Campbell. A recording
is available by contacting me.
I am the mountainy singer--
The voice of the peasant's dream,
The cry of the wind on the wooded hill,
The leap of the fish in the stream.
Quiet and love I sing--
The carn on the mountain crest,
The cailin in her lover's arms,
The child at its mother's breast.
Beauty and peace I sing--
The fire on the open hearth,
The cailleach spinning at her wheel,
The plough in the broken earth.
Travail and pain I sing--
The bride on the childing bed,
The dark man laboring at his rhymes,
The ewe in the lambing shed.
Sorrow and death I sing--
The canker come on the corn,
The fisher lost in the mountain loch,
The cry at the mouth of the morn.
No other life I sing,
For I am sprung of the stock
That broke the hilly land for bread,
And built the nest in the rock!

worship on May 13 , 2001. The dedication reads "Commissioned
by St. Jame's Lutheran Church, Burnsville, MN with thanksgiving
to God in honor of Kelvin Miller's thirty years of music ministry
on his fiftieth birthday." It was originally scored for
soprano sax, organ and chorus, but I also have it available for
trumpet instead of sax. Text is from Psalm 145. Moderate difficulty,
festive, uptempo mostly.
I Will Give You The Key (SA
children's chorus, piano, opt. clarinet) Duration: 1'50"
This is available as a separate octavo or as part of a set called
Four From "Whiskers and Rhymes".
Please click on that title for more information.
I Will Take the Cup of Salvation
(cantor, congregation and/or unison choir, piano, opt. descant,
opt. handbells) Duration:2'00"
CHORAL SCORE - $1.50; LICENSE - $37, one year use.
(Kallman Creates, publ.)
This is a psalm antiphon which I wrote for worship in 1990. The
text is Psalm 116: 12-19, suitable for general use but particularly
appropriate for Maundy Thursday. If you purchase a license, I
will send you a reprintable copy of the refrain to include in
your bulletin. You must still purchase separate copies of the
score for accompanist, soloists and treble voices in your choir
if you choose to make use of the descant.
Impressions (violin, double
bass) Duration: 7'30"
SCORE AND PARTS: $32 (Kallman Creates, publ.)
This piece was commissioned by Roger Frisch and William Schrickel
who in 1987 were both members of the Minnesota Orchestra and
the Minneapolis Artists Ensemble. It is an animated dialogue
for a seldom used combination of string instruments. The double
bass part is particularly challenging. A very good recital recording
is available.
In Endless Song: A Mosaic of
American Folk Music (SSA or SAB, string quartet and piano, or
piano four hands) Duration: 26'00"
CHORAL SCORE: $6.20 ; FULL SCORE: $29.00; STRING PARTS:
$42.00
(Kallman Creates Publications)
This work was commissioned and premiered by the six combined
choirs of the Angelica Cantanti youth choir program in Bloomington,
Minnesota and the Cavani String Quartet of Cleveland, Ohio. Anton
Armstrong was hired to conduct the premiere. The work is scored
for treble and SAB voices (only portions of it are SAB, although
I am currently adapting it for use also by only SSA), piano and
string quartet. There are six different folk songs with extended
connecting interludes for the strings and piano. The titles of
the folk songs are: "How Can I Keep From Singing",
"Pretty Little Horses", "Skip To My Lou",
"Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "Skinnamalinkadoolium",
and "Old Joe Clark". I have adapted a 10 minute segment
of the larger work for the Hong Kong Children's Choir under the
title of Three American Folk Songs. I may eventually adapt individual
songs from the medley to be performed by SSA and piano (maybe
four hands) only. But the combination of string quartet and piano
with the children's voices works very well! A recording is available
upon request.
I am excited to have been asked by Angelica Cantanti to conduct
the work again when they celebrate theire 25th anniversary in
April 2006 (see events page). And the Cavani's will return to
join them!
In Heaven Above (SATB chorus,
a cappella) Duration: 3'00"
CHORAL OCTAVO - $1.70/ea. (Kallman Creates, publ.)
This lovely Swedish hymn was commissioned for Philip Brunelle's
choir at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis and premiered
in November 1996. I made use of a fair amount of divisi within
each section as his choir is quite large, so this setting works
best for college and community groups or for larger church choirs.
In The Garden (two violins,
piano) Duration: 3'30"
Commissioned by the Solovey Strings, this setting of the old
standard (definitely a favorite of my grandparents) is available
in the set Two Hymns For Violin and
Piano published by Morning Star Music Publishers (800-647-2117).
It is also recorded (complete with bird noises from the garden!)
on "Cherished Heirlooms". This can be ordered in CD
or tape format from the Solovey Strings by calling 888-209-8855
or by visiting <http://hometown.aol.com/soloveystr/soloveystr.html>.
In Thee Is Gladness (SATB chorus,
organ) Duration: 3'00"
This has been one of my best selling anthems with Morning Star
since it was published in 1992. The choral parts are not difficult,
while the organ part is a bit more to work up but great fun to
play (at least, this is what several organists have told me,
including John Ferguson, who was the first to premiere the anthem
with his choir at St. Olaf, Cantorei). It is an uptempo, uplifting
setting with an Easter theme or with optional texts for more
general occasions. The octavo is available from Morning Star
Music Publishers (800-647-2117) who also have a demo recording.
It has also been recorded by Cantorei on the CD "Te Deum",
available from St. Olaf Records (507-646-3646 or <www.stolafrecords.com>).
Infant Holy, Infant Lowly (SATB
chorus, a cappella) Duration: 2'00"
This short setting of one of my favorite carols was arranged
in 1980 for the Eau Claire (WI) Musical Arts Chorale. It is accessible
to high school ages and church choirs but has also received performances
and recordings by community, college and professional singers.
It is available from Boosey and Hawkes (212-358-5300) or through
any music distributor. The best recording I know of is by the
Ensemble Singers of the Plymouth Music Series on their 1995 release
"Welcome Christmas! Carols from Around the World",
conducted by Philip Brunelle. The recording can be ordered by
calling (612) 547-1480.

Jacob's Ladder (SATB chorus, piano) Duration: 3'00"
I arranged this anthem in a jazzy gospel setting for my adult
choir at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield, MN in 1990. It
has since been used widely by church, high school and college
choirs. It is published by Morning Star Music (800-647-2117).
They also have an alternative piano part, much harder (but very
cool!), which was played ad lib by Paul Oakley for their demo
recording and then transcribed. The setting is also recorded
on the CD "Te Deum", sung by Cantorei of St. Olaf College
under the direction of John Ferguson with Don Stille at the keyboard.
They add a nice touch by singing the final phrase of the song
in a straight a cappella fashion before going into my bluesy
uptempo piano intro. (Darn it, Ferg, why didn't I think of that?)
The recording can be obtained by calling St. Olaf Records (507-646-3646)
or by visiting <www.stolafrecords.com>.
Jazz Suite (five trombones)
Duration: 13'00"
SCORE AND PARTS - $49 (Kallman Creates, publ.)
This piece has been around for a while (1983), but is still finding
it's way into programs and is much fun to play (if you have the
chops, which I don't anymore). The suite is in five movements
and is pretty much straight ahead, traditional jazz. The parts
are fairly challenging. Good high school players can probably
handle the first two movements, but things get a bit trickier
after that. A good bass trombone player is definitely a necessity,
and a conductor is helpful but not essential. The movement titles
are: I. Stroll; II.Blues for "Flash"; III. Off the
Trail; IV. Lazy Ike; V. Take Four. I have a good concert tape
available.
The Jig Is Up (wind ensemble)
Duration: 5'00"
Commissioned by a consortium of ten Minnesota colleges, this
work is now available through Boosey and Hawkes since 2004 and
has proven to be very popular with high school, community, college
and professional bands. I don't know how many performances there
were in the first year of publication, but it is getting alot
of mileage, and that makes the composer (and also the publisher,
I presume) very happy! Boosey also has a good recording of it
for their demo by the Ithaca Wind Ensemble.
Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
(SATB chorus, brass quintet, organ) Duration: 3'30"
CHORAL SCORE - $1.85/each; FULL CONDUCTOR SCORE - $4.50; SET
OF BRASS PARTS - $15.00 (Kallman Creates, publ.)
I completed this setting for a friend's wedding in May 2000.
It was enjoyable to work with the majesty of Beethoven's noble
melody coupled with Van Dyke's uplifting text. The brass and
organ parts are accessible to the intermediate player.
Jubilee, We Are Set Free (youth
choir church musical for unis. treb. voices, piano, opt. flute)
Duration: approx. 40 minutes
DIRECTOR/ACCOMP. SCORE (full script and score, perf. directions)
- $25.00
SINGER'S EDITION (script and choral parts) - $4.60/each
FLUTE PART - $1.85
(Kallman Creates, publ.)
God's people are in bondage--to sin. But Christ, through his
death and resurrection, has set us free! Now that we are children
of God, our lives are different. Freed from our former life,
we are called to "clothe ourselves new". In this original
musical we see into the hearts of Fred, Mary, Matthew, Rita,
and Wally, characters of different ages and walks of life, as
they participate in worship. While the nasty Naysayers cast doubt
at every turn, the characters are able to face their own doubts
and fears and experience the freedom of God's forgiveness. Other
characters include a crying baby, a reluctant Moses, whining
Israelites, a burning bush and God, who speaks a message of hope
and freedom.
Jubilee, We Are Set Free was designed to be incorporated
into a worship service, but also works well on its own. The congregation
participates in the Confession, Prayer of the Day and choruses
of three of the five songs. There are plenty of speaking parts
to go around, and the songs are appealing and easy to learn.
Set requirements are simple. In the original production, the
youth enjoyed creating many of the props. Suitable for grades
2 through 6. Book and lyrics by Christine Kallman.
Jubilee, We Are Set Free (octavo
version for unison treble voices and piano) Duration:3'30"
OCTAVO SCORE: $1.60 /ea. (Kallman Creates, publ.)
Julefest: A Medley of Scandinavian
Carols (SATB chorus, chamber orchestra) Duration: 12'30"
CHORAL SCORE - $3.80/each, or LICENCED at $2.50/each
FULL SCORE - $37
INSTRUMENTAL PARTS - $122
(Kallman Creates, publ.)
Julefest consists of five carols from Scandinavia, including
"I Am So Glad Each Christmas Eve", "O Yule Full
of Gladness", and "Bright and Glorious is the Sky".
I was commissioned to write this medley in 1987 by Philip Brunelle,
the first of many projects he has involved me with over the years.
It was written for the chorus and orchestra of the Plymouth Music
Series in Minneapolis. There is also a part for a soprano soloist.
The SATB parts are not difficult, while the orchestral parts
are a bit more challenging. The exact instrumentation is 1101,
2000, percussion (one player), harp and strings. I do have a
good recording of the premiere performance which was broadcast
nationwide on public radio.
Just A Closer Walk With Thee
( two violins, piano) Duration: 2'30"
SCORE AND PARTS- $12.50 (Kallman Creates, publ.)
This gospel jazz setting of the traditional standard was commissioned
by the Solovey Strings and is available on a recording called
"Sacred Heirlooms". The recording is available in CD
or cassette format from the Solovey Strings at <http://hometown.aol.com/soloveystr/soloveystr.html>
or by calling 888-209-8855.
Just A Closer Walk With Thee
( SATB chorus, piano) Duration: 4'20"
This setting works well in either the worship or concert venue
and has been used extensively in both. The piano part is fairly
involved and goes through various key changes and styles. Vocally,
the arrangement starts with a four-part men's swing "vamp"
in a quasi Mill Brothers style. Then there are more lyrical verses
returning to the swing vamp and finally dying away. Published
by Morning Star Music (800-746-2117).

SET OF INSTRUMENTAL PARTS (flute, clar. or oboe, horn, piano
and/or organ, 2 violins, viola, cello) : $44.00
(Kallman Creates, publ.)
I am very excited about this piece, as it seems to be well suited
for good children's choirs as well as older treble voices, even
college groups and beyond. It is an uplifting sacred text by
George Herbert, also set to music by Vaughan Williams in his
cantata Hodie. I wrote it on commission for an event called
"A Night of Children's Voices", and I conducted the
premiere featuring the combined forces of Angelica Cantanti and
the Northfield Youth Choirs. They did a splendid job, but unfortunately
we did not record it! I'm still looking for a quality recording
of this piece by another good children's choir or a women's ensemble.

Kris Tjornehoj asked me to write a contemporary anthem for her
choir at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Lakeland,
Minnesota, in celebration of the congregation's tenth anniversary.
They premiered it beautifully in September of 1997. The text
is based on Chapter 5 of the Gospel of Saint Matthew, especially
verses 13-16 where Christ encourages us to be the salt of the
earth and the light of the world.
Let Us Raise Eternal Alleluias
( congregational hymn) Duration: 3'15"
I wrote both the text and the tune for this hymn on commission
from Ezekiel Lutheran Church in River Falls, Wisconsin in celebration
of their centennial year in 1990. A year later, I wrote a composition
for wind ensemble based on the hymn, called Fantasia
Variations on "Eternal Alleluias". Both the
hymn and the band piece are published by TRN Music in Ruidoso,
N.M. (505-258-4325).

This setting of a 15th century anonymous Christmas text was the
first new piece written for the Plymouth Music Series Ensemble
Singers, a newly formed professional choir which has since gained
a reputation as one of this country's leading choral ensembles.
Joyous and upbeat as well as challenging, it requires excellent
singers and instrumentalists at the college or professional level.
The exact instrumentation is 1111, 2210, percussion (one player),
harp, and strings. I have a recording available from the premiere
which was broadcast nationwide on public radio stations.

This setting of Sara Teasdale's thoughtful and moving poem was
written on commission from the Mankato ( MN) Children's Chorus
and premiered under Julie Aune at the Minnesota Music Educators
Association Annual Convention in Minneapolis in 1998. The vocal
and instrumental parts are not difficult, and if the three part
divisi towards the end is too much for your group to handle,
just sing the top line in unison, and have the pianist fill in
the harmony parts. I have a concert recording of the premiere
available.
Light of Christ (musical setting
of the liturgy in With One Voice for congregation, optional instruments)
This is the first setting of the liturgy found in the hymnal
With One Voice published in 1995 by Augsburg Fortress.
It is actually called Setting Four, as the hymnal is advertised
as a continuation of the Lutheran Book of Worship ( 1978) which
already had three musical settings of the liturgy. Augsburg Fortress
commissioned me to write this setting in a somewhat blended style,
one that is somewhere between "traditional" and "contemporary"
( whatever those terms mean anymore). With One Voice has
been incredibly successful, with well over a million copies of
the pew addition sold to thousands of churches throughout the
country. It is probably safe to say that Light of Christ
is being sung by hundreds of congregations throughout the country
on Sunday mornings. It is also available for purchase separately
on CD ROM for congregations who don't own With One Voice
but wish to use my musical setting. Augsburg Fortress (800-328-4648)
also has a recording and instrument parts.
Litany of Healing Prayers (cantor
or unison choir, congregation, keyboard) Duration: 2' 30'
VOCAL/PIANO SCORE: $1.25/each; ONE YEAR LICENSE : $40/ year (Kallman
Creates, publ.)
I composed the Litany of Healing Prayers in July 2003 while on
staff at Holden Village, a Lutheran retreat center in the Cascade
mountains of central Washington. I made some adaptations to the
setting in 2004 for my daughter's confirmation service at our
congregation in Northfield, Minnesota. The litany is led by a
cantor (or unison choir) with congregational responses to the
same simple melody on the words "We pray for healing, Lord",
"We pray for courage, Lord", "We humbly thank
you, Lord". Each response is sung three times, as there
are nine prayers offered by the leader. Congregations may adapt
the litany as desired, inserting prayers that are more specific
to their purposes or to current events. The back page of the
score includes instructions for use and suggestions for how to
introduce it to your congregation. When you purchase a license,
I will send two copies of the score for leader and accompanist,
a bulletin insert (optional) and permission to reproduce the
score as necessary if it will be led by more than one soloist
or by a unison choir. The litany may also lead directly into
either the hymn or anthem version of Dear God. (Dear God not
included in this license.)
Lizard Jazz (2 or 3 part treble
choir, piano, opt. Orff instruments, opt. perc.) Duration:
5 minutes
Lizard Jazz was written on commission for the combined
singers of the Northfield Youth Choirs Concert Choir and the
Greenvale Park Elementary School Choir. It premiered in Northfield
with three performances in the spring of 2000. The text (in full,
below), by American poet Maurya Simon, won the Mary Carolyn Davies
Award for "poem most suitable to be set to music" from
the Poetry Society of America. The entire project really was
the result of the efforts of Cora Scholz and Carol Benson, directors
of the two choirs.
Lizard Jazz is longer than most children's choir anthems,
but it is not difficult to learn. The vocal part is melodic and
lyrical. The optional Orff part (easy and written for child players)
and the percussion part (a fairly advanced part involving mainly
mallets, also optional) convey a dry, brittle, desert feel. The
piano part consists largely of jazz harmonies and syncopated
rhythms but requires no improvisation.
Lizard Jazz was made possible in cooperation with the
Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council through funding from the
Minnesota State legislature. It is now available through Mark
Foster/Shawnee Press
Here is a copy of Maurya Simon's wonderful poem:
LIZARD
JAZZ
how earnestly this concerto of geckos
chirps our house into a staccato
of echoes, as each note syncopates
the night's pauses and phrases.
Our lives buzz in a hubbub of voices,
inner and outer, a rainbow of noises --
clock's tick, baby's rattle, tolled bell,
and the lowing of cattle -- all still,
stilled, when the moon's shutters open
when the room's keen congregation
gathers on tiptoe, flexes its elbows --
the walls trembling with shadows --
Oh, geckos!
--Maurya Simon (reprinted by permission of the author)
Lord Of All Hopefulness (SAB,
flute and organ) Duration: 3'10"
(Kallman Creates, publ.)
This is one of my earliest published settings for church choir
which is no longer in print and now available through Kallman
Creates Publication. I arranged it for the installation of Pastor
Andrew Boe at Christ Lutheran Church in Menomonie, Wisconsin
where I used to be a member and choir director. It was first
published in 1982. This anthem is very suitable for the average
or even smaller-sized church choir.
Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service
( SATB, piano) Duration: 3'10"
One of my favorite hymns, I arranged this for worship at my church,
Bethel Lutheran in Northfield, Minnesota. It has since been published
in Bradley Ellingboe's series with the Neil A. Kjos Music Company.
It can be ordered through your music dealership or by calling
1-800-797-KJOS. Kjos also has a CD demo recording available.
The Lord's Prayer (medium voice,
organ) Duration: 3'15"
VOCAL/ORGAN SCORE - $4.95(Kallman Creates, publ.)
I set the text from the Lord's Prayer for my own wedding in 1978.
The music is moderately slow and meditative, and it can be performed
by the intermediate singer and organist.
Lullaby (piano solo) Duration:
2'00"
SCORE: $3.15 (Kallman Creates, publ.)
This is the middle movement in a set of five pieces which I wrote
back in 1982 and gave to my little sister Deanna on her thirteenth
birthday. (Just for reference, my little sister just turned thirty!)
I'll soon be listing the entire suite as available on my website,
but need to fix some things up first. This lullaby is available
now, however. It is an intermediate level piece, accessible to
the serious middle or high school student, and really is quite
lovely and fun to play if I do say so myself. (One risks feigning
the sin of pride when setting up one's own website to promote
one's own music, doesn't one?) I also used this same music as
the basis for the fourhand piano accompaniment for "A Cradle
Song", the middle piece for SSAA voices in my choral set
Three About Babies. No recording
is available of the Lullaby, but if you are an average
adult pianist, you should be able to read through it quite easily.

ThIs work was written on commission for the St. Olaf Christmas
Festival in 1990. It is a short, quiet piece which followed the
procession of choirs and weaved together some of the musical
themes that those choirs had just sung. The St. Olaf Orchestra
under the baton of Steven Amundson gave it those first few performances
in 1990. There is a recording available entitled "Arise
And Set the Captive Free" from that year's festival. You

Messiah, Prince of Peace
(full orchestra) Duration: 7'20"
This is part of a longer piece called Trinity
Canticles which I wrote in 1989 for the Bloomington (MN)
Symphony Orchestra. It is often used as a separate composition
and has become the most performed orchestral work I have written.
The St. Olaf Orchestra will program it again this year as the
opening of their Christmas Festival. It is a serene work featuring
mainly slow, sustained strings at the beginning and the end.
In the middle section, the winds are given quotations of "O
Come, O Come Emmanuel" and "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded",
calling attention to the central events of birth, death and resurrection
in the life of Christ. Messiah, Prince of Peace and the
full composition Trinity Canticles are both published
by MMB Music in St. Louis (800-543-3771). Recordings may be ordered

Metamorphosis on an Original
Cakewalk (concert band) Duration: 5'30"
This was a commission from the Hudson (WI) High School Concert
Band. It premiered at the Wisconsin State Conference of Music
Educators in 1986 with Kris Tjornehoj conducting. The piece begins
with a playful cakewalk (alto saxophone and euphonium solos)
but quickly dissolves or "metamorphoses" into a minimalistic
section where only the charactaristic cakewalk rhythm remains.
A strong xylophone player who can count independently is a necessity
here. Actually, most of the percussionists and woodwinds play
their own patterns independently of one another in this section,
so everybody has to count while the conductor basically beats
in four. The cakewalk tune returns at the end. This is suitable
for strong high school and college programs. The work is published
by Boosey and Hawkes in their 2005 Windependence series.
Miss Melinda Mittelmore
(SATB chorus, a cappella) Duration: 4'15"
CHORAL SCORE - $1.85/each
(Kallman Creates, publ.)
This was written on commission from the Southeastern Minnesota
High School Honors Choir, an excellent group based in Rochester,
Minnesota, founded and conducted by Rick Kvam. He requested something
uptempo and humorous to fit into their program, so I asked my
wife to pen a story for the lyric. Her creation tells the tale
of a young girl who tricks two would-be suitors. The complete
text is printed below. The Honors Choir went to Europe with Miss
Melinda Mittelmore on the program in July 1998 and won first
prize in an international choral competition in Vienna. They
have recorded the piece for commercial release on their CD "A
Certain Height". For more information, call 507-252-0505
or e-mail to cae.millwork.com.
Cyrano and Tyrano were two unlucky fellows.
One worked in the garden, the other at the bellows.
The cause of their misfortune was very widely known:
Miss Melinda Mittelmore they wanted for their own.
Poor Cyrano!
Poor Tyrano!
Miss Melinda Mittelmore they wanted for their own.
Melinda was a young one, a prim one, a shy one,
Miss Melinda Mittelmore was everybody's dream.
Melinda was a quick one, a clever one, a sly one,
Melinda was a little more than what at first she seemed.
Cyrano held a hoe and dreamed away the hours,
Flattered all the maidens with verses and with flowers.
"Miss Mittelmore," he winked, "Linger at the pond
tonight."
She said, "You carry roses, I will play the pipe."
Tyrano, a burly lad, wrestled wood all day,
Commandeered the bellows, always got his way,
Ordered Melinda, "Be at the pond tonight."
She said, "I'll smell of roses, you play the pipe."
Poor Cyrano!
Poor Tyrano!
Miss Melinda Mittelmore they wanted for their own.
Melinda went in darkness to the pond that night and looked:
Cyrano and Tyrano stood with their elbows hooked.
Just as the moon shed a telling beam of light,
Miss Melinda Mittelmore ran safely out of sight!
Melinda was a young one, a prim one, a shy one,
Miss Melinda Mittelmore was everybody's dream.
Melinda was a quick one, a clever one, a sly one,
Melinda was a little more than what at first she seemed.

SA treble choir or soloists) Duration: 8'00"
CHORAL SCORE: $2.80 (Kallman Creates Publications)
This is the form of the Missa Brevis that grew out of Lutheran
worship, consisting of Kyrie and Gloria only. It was a commission
from Magnum Chorum and the Northfield Youth Choirs, who premiered
the work together at an All Saints Sunday worship service at
Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Minnesota in
1998. Magnum Chorum also performed the work several times, covering
the treble choir parts with two soloists from their choir.

brass quintet) Duration: 2'00"
CHORAL OCTAVO - $1.70/each; FULL CONDUCTOR'S SCORE - $4.20; SET
OF BRASS PARTS - $12.60
(Kallman Creates, publ.)
I arranged this for my adult choir to sing on Easter Sunday 1999.
It is a majestic setting of an early American Sacred Harp Tune
(B.F White, 1844). The theme is resurrection, and the text speaks
of rising to meet Jesus: "...when I hear the trumpet sound
in that morning." The instrumentation for the quintet is
two trumpets ( B-flat), horn, trombone, and tuba (or bass trombone).
Both choral and brass parts are accessible to the average church
musician.

Land) (SSA chorus and piano) Duration: 5'00"
CHORAL SCORE: $1.90/each (Kallman Creates, publ.)
I conducted the premiere of this spiritual setting in May 2004
with the New World Singers of the Columbus (OH) Children's Choir,
Sandy Mathias, Music Director. We dedicated the performance to
the memory of Moses Hogan. He was originally to have fulfilled
the commission which he had offered as a gift through the annual
Chorus America silent auction. The Columbus Children's Choir
had purchased the item in 2001, and after Moses untimely death,
Sandra contacted me to request that I fulfill it. The anthem
is a rouser, and the CCC used it to close both of their spring
benefit concerts. The music alternates abruptly from a gospel
style with swung eighth notes on the refrain to a straight four
on the verses. The piano part is fun (a little more than the
average treble choir accompaniment ) and all of the gospel sections
are written out, so no improvisation is required. A recording
of the concert premiere is available which I am using for promotional
purposes.

to Northfield in 1986. He was retiring a |
