Composer's Notes:
I was commissioned to arrange this as the opening hymn for the Pax Christi Award Ceremony at St. John's University in May 1994. This is a massive, full-blown setting, with two quartets of antiphonal herald trumpets, full orchestra, organ, SATB massed chorus, congregation, the whole kit and kaboodle. I was asked in 2005 by Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church in Moraga, CA to reorchestrate the arrangement for a more standard orchestra, and no herald trumpets. This second version was also used at the opening worship of the National Convention of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Church in 2005. The exact instrumentation of the second version (no herald trumpets) is 2222, 4431, timpani, percussion (2), harp, organ, strings and SATB chorus with optional congregation on all the verses. I have since rearranged the accompaniment twice for different occasions, so now I have settings for SATB, optional congregation, brass septet and organ, or for SATB, optional congregation, and wind ensemble.
